This is an account of a terrible experience I had with cheap web hosting. Here’s how it went down…

When I first started doing business online I used to pay a lot of money for my web hosting. How much is a lot of money? 25 dollars per month to be exact!

Anyway so one day I am talking to a friend of mine and I happened to mention that I was hosting my website with this great web host for $25/month.

She practically leapt from her seat and screamed “WHAT…ARE YOU CRAZY!”

So I asked her “how much are you paying?” and she replied “$2.75/month.”

“WOW!” I exclaimed, “are they any good?”

“They’re great!” she said adding, “I have no complaints!”

That was it for me…I was sold! I mean this was a no brainer!

I had been paying 300 dollars a year for web hosting and now I had the opportunity to pay a fraction of that…$33 a year to be exact!

What my friend never told me though was that her website was just a hobby, something she updated and checked on very infrequently.

3. Bad Neighborhood: Because of their super low prices cheap web hosting services do not mind who and what kind of websites they host which explains why so many spam sites and porn sites host with them!

Now problems arise when your legit website is located on the same server as those other bad websites.

Because seeing that your website shares the same internet address with those bad sites and as far as the search engines are concerned that means that your website is as guilty as they are for polluting and corrupting the internet!

And do you know what the search engines usually do to such sites? They punish them by either penalizing them or banning them altogether from their indexes.

Bottom line, when your website shares the same server as bad sites that are often penalized by the search engines you can kiss goodbye to free search engine traffic forever!

4. Tendency To Disappear Overnight!

Despite the many irritating problems I was having with my cheap web hosting provider when all was said and done things were going pretty well!

The Right Way To Find The Right Keyword!

The greatest facilitator in doing the right thing is to avoid doing the wrong thing and when it comes to conducting keyword research the approach is no different.

So let’s look at one of the most highly promoted (and incorrect) methods to conduct keyword research before we review the correct way to go about it.

The Wrong Way To Do Keyword Research

Okay let’s consider an actual example. The keyword I shall use in this example is internet marketing online.

I have chosen this keyword because I have a personal history with it (but not in the biblical sense if you get my drift)

Anyway when I decided to target internet marketing online as one of the keywords to optimize my blog for (at the time it was actually a static website) there were three driving factors that swayed my decision and they were:

1. It was supposedly a heavy-volume web traffic keyword

2. At the time its difficulty level was moderate especially when considered with its “apparent” web traffic flow value!

3. Did this keyword really have profit value? In other words were internet business marketers bidding on it because they could make money form it?

Now I came to my conclusion to optimize for this keyword through the use of various recommended software tools of the time which primarily included the much touted then but now defunct overture keyword tool.

The overture keyword tool assured me that every month there were several thousand searches for this particular keyword. Added to an apparently fairly easy keyword difficulty level (at least at the time…it was approx. 64%) this seemed like a true win-win situation for me here!

You can imagine my excitement. I was ecstatic and thought WOW I was really onto something and that soon I would be making money online hand over fist!

To shorten what would otherwise be a long and somewhat boring story let’s just say I went and did serious SEO (search engine optimization) for the Keyword internet marketing online until several years ago I eventually got to the number one spot on the front page of Google!

Getting To The Top Of Google For The Keyword Internet Marketing Online Did Not Result In A Flood Of Traffic!

To this very day my blog is still the number one listing on Google for the keyword internet marketing online but the truth of the matter is that now that I am far better at understanding and conducting keyword research I know why I only get a trickle of web traffic from this keyword.

But before I continue let me show you some startling facts I have since learned about this keyword internet marketing online.

As you can see the difficulty level for this keyword is not for the faint of heart!

Those bid results were culled from Google itself so you can be assured that marketers are confident that clicks for this keyword convert extremely well into profit.

Which explains why those marketers are prepared to bid up to $6.35 for each and every single click!

Okay now here’s the question of the hour…

How Much Web Traffic Does The Keyword Internet Marketing Online Command On A Daily Basis?

Remember earlier on I stated that one of the three factors that swayed my decision to optimize for this keyword was the amount of web traffic one could expect from a well placed ranking on Google.

Remember that I also got that initial information from the now non-existent overture keyword tool which assured me that several thousand people conducted searches every month for the keyword internet marketing online.

Okay now let’s look at the reality. I used a number of resources and compared them against one another as well as the results I have observed over the past three years since my blog attained the number one listing on Google page one for the keyword internet marketing online.

Okay according to Google itself the absolute maximum amount of web traffic a top listing can expect for this keyword is:

Now this is Google so one would assume that those figures are pretty accurate right?

Well they probably are but I learned the hard way that other parameters come into play within those estimated 42-53 clicks per day shown in that top row!

Those other factors are that those estimates are not for an exact phrase search of the keyword internet marketing online.

In fact the reality that I have since learned is that the bottom row is the more accurate estimate of how many clicks one can expect for an organic search on Google for the keyword internet marketing online!

Since then I have discovered another free tool that backs up this belief.

As you can see these figures approximate those of the last row of the diagram immediately above.

Okay let’s just do a couple of checks using some other tools. This next one comes from a well recommended fairly expensive tool (it cost $157 dollars I think) which unfortunately happens to be way off track in estimating the amount of daily web traffic possible from the keyword internet marketing online!

Well we know better because we know that those figures from that keyword tool are wrong!

We have already established that a 1^st ranked listing on Google page one can only expect about 3-4 figures on a daily basis! My blog is living testament to that fact (from several years of experience).

Always Look At The Amount Of Daily Web Traffic Not The Monthly Figures!

As a precaution always look at the daily traffic estimates not the monthly web traffic estimates to get a better idea of the amount of web traffic you can expect from any given keyword.

And also never forget that even though you do make it to the front page of Google for your most coveted keyword you are not alone on that front page.

In other words your listing is going to share any searches and web traffic to be had from that keyword!

If I Knew Then What I Know Now!

Okay the keyword difficulty level for the term make money is pretty high (a little above 80%) but back then it used to be in the lower 70% range.

That said though, it would have still made far better sense for me optimize my blog for this keyword instead.

Why?

Well let’s look at the estimated web traffic flow for the keyword make money using the system just outlined above:

Okay according to Google the exact phrase search of the keyword make money returns a an estimated 311-389 clicks per day or searchers per day (hmmm…compare that to the 3-4 for internet marketing online).

You can also see that internet business marketers are very comfortable bidding almost up to $3 per click for this word.

But to make sure that Google’s figures are accurate let’s double check with another tool:

Yup! These figures are near identical!

Now imagine the amount of qualified web traffic I would be getting today if I had known back then which keywords to search engine optimize my website for.

My blog could probably be on the front page of Google for the keyword make money!

And though the keyword make money is not as exact as make money online, most people who type in the term make money do so with the intention of trying to find out how to make money online.

As for the keyword make money online?

Such a term is more an industry term as compared to make money.

This means that someone who types in the keyword make money is likely to be a better prospect because they are probably new to the internet marketing world unlike someone searching via the industry keyword phrase make money online!

And that concludes this tutorial on the value of proper keyword research!
